Animal Planet is an American cable channel held by Discovery, Inc. First founded on October 1, 1996, the network is primarily dedicated to series and documentaries about wild animals and household pets.
The channel was formerly a joint venture with BBC Worldwide and supported educational programming such as nature documentaries. In 2008, Animal Planet used a more mature programming direction, with an focused on aggressive and predatory descriptions of animals, as well as an increase in docuseries and reality programs following animal-related searches and occupations. Animal Planet re-named again in October 2018, changing back towards a more family-oriented direction.
As of January 2016, around 91,603,000 households get Animal Planet. Discovery has also founded or licensed international versions of the channel in many regions.
